The retro soul spirit is more alive than ever thanks to the expressive force of artists like Steffen Morrison, who captivated the audience that filled the Jamboree at MasiMas 2019. His approach draws on the rhythms and tunes of the greats of the genre, but also the harmonious sounds of the Crystals, the rock of the Rolling Stones and the lyrics of Lou Reed – a set of musical influences he seasons with his own style. Morrison began his career in the 1990s, in Amsterdam and he recorded his first EP, Just Another Man (2016), thanks to his relationship with the Norwegian producer Tjeerd Oosterhuis. It was his first chart success. With his first album, Movin’ On (2018), he toured half the world and managed to get his name on the same bill as the likes of Maceo Parker, Joss Stone and Gregory Porter. Now he presents the album Soul Revolution (2020, more than two million listens on Spotify), in which he draws on his roots in Surinam to champion the deeper side of soul, based on human life and experience. “Soul means being genuine, pure and raw with your emotions,” he said in an interview in Ruta 66. So now you know.
