Matyas Gayer — Classical and Modern Jazz Piano, Improvisation, and Tradition
Hungarian pianist Matyas Gayer, based in London, is one of the leading figures of his generation. Awarded from a young age, he has developed his own style and a distinctive musical voice, drawing from the grandeur of classical and modern jazz piano, combining respect for tradition with freshness and personality in every performance.
A two-time finalist in the Montreux Jazz Piano Competition, Matyas has established himself on the London and European scene, performing at the most prestigious clubs and collaborating with musicians such as Eddie Henderson, Ralph Moore, Scott Hamilton, Rick Margitza, Don Menza, Jim Rotondi, Luis Bonilla, Jesse Davis, Deborah Brown, and Carla Cook. His repertoire combines original compositions and standards, reinterpreted with sensitivity and creative freedom.
His training blends classical and folk roots with an early love for jazz: “Yes, standards are very important to me; I love playing the jazz tradition, but interpreting it in my own way” Gayer says. Reflecting on his earliest musical influences, he adds: “The first music I listened to was Hungarian folk, which my mother used to sing when I was a child. I studied classical piano and fell in love with Bach, Chopin, Bartók… My father introduced me to some jazz records, and from then on, I wanted to improvise.”
For this concert, Matyas Gayer is joined by five exceptional musicians to explore original compositions and jazz classics with energy, improvisation, and constant dialogue, keeping the spirit of jazz alive in every phrase.
Why shouldn’t you miss it?
Because Matyas Gayer combines technique, sensitivity, and creativity to deliver classical and modern jazz that honors tradition while sounding completely contemporary, turning every piece into a space for musical discovery and dialogue.
The Global Music Foundation presents the GMF Barcelona Jazz Workshop 2026, a musical celebration combining jazz, blues, and Latin music in concerts, workshops, and late-night sessions with world-class artists.
