Matyas Gayer & Will Bonness — Piano Trio and Sonic Exploration
Two immensely talented pianists, Matyas Gayer and Will Bonness, present a session dedicated to the jazz piano trio, a format that allows great improvisational freedom and the exploration of sonic landscapes and textures. The session will include several trios led by both musicians, as well as performances by scholarship students who have come to Barcelona to share this experience.
Will Bonness, a Canadian pianist from Winnipeg, won the Juno Award for Jazz Album of the Year in 2022 for Change of Plans. At 17, he joined Maynard Ferguson’s Big Bop Nouveau Band for a world tour and, since then, has performed alongside Derrick Gardner, Jon Gordon, Quincy Davis, Regina Carter, Avishai Cohen, and Lionel Loueke, in addition to appearing at numerous jazz festivals in Canada and abroad.
Matyas Gayer, a Hungarian pianist based in London, finalist in the Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition (2014 and 2015) and winner of the 2015 Gramofon Award, has collaborated with musicians such as Jesse Davis, Jim Rotondi, Grant Stewart, Luis Bonilla, and Don Menza. He is a regular member of Eddie Henderson’s and Rick Margitza’s groups and has established himself as one of the most prominent voices of the new generation of European pianists.
Together, Gayer and Bonness offer a dialogue between tradition and freshness, combining virtuosity, sensitivity, and a chemistry that transforms each trio into a sonic journey. The blend of seasoned musicians and young talents creates an atmosphere of constant discovery and moments of surprising improvisation.
Why shouldn’t you miss it?
Because this session reveals the full potential of the jazz piano trio, with two masters and young musicians creating vibrant, intimate, and nuanced music capable of moving and surprising any jazz lover.
